I love writing but hate starting. The page is awfully white and it says, “You may have fooled some of the people some of the time but those days are over, giftless. I’m not your agent and I’m not your mommy. I’m a white piece of paper, you wanna dance with me?” And I really, really don’t.

Aaron Sorkin (via thatwasnotveryravenofyou)
It is so comforting to know that even Aaron Sorkin feels this way, because it’s how I feel every. single. time.

Lucifer in Starlight
On a starred night Prince Lucifer uprose.
Tired of his dark dominion swung the fiend
Above the rolling ball in cloud part screened,
Where sinners hugged their spectre of repose.
Poor prey to his hot fit of pride were those.
And now upon his western wing he leaned,
Now his huge bulk o’er Afric’s sands careened,
Now the black planet shadowed Arctic snows.
Soaring through wider zones that pricked his scars
With memory of the old revolt from Awe,
He reached a middle height, and at the stars,
Which are the brain of heaven, he looked, and sank.
Around the ancient track marched, rank on rank,
The army of unalterable law.

Thayet dipped her handkerchief in Alanna’s water basin and wiped the knight’s face. “Some women can cry and look beautiful,” she said dryly. “You and I can’t.”
“I know,” Alanna sniffed. “I get red and blotchy.

Tamora Pierce, Lioness Rampant
I just find it comforting to remember that even the Lioness and the most beautiful princess in the eastern lands are ugly when they cry.

I don’t often actually identify with the main characters in books. So here’s to the two characters I do identify with. Keladry of Mindelan, “the Protector of the Small” from Tamora Pierce’s… well, Protector of the Small quartet; and Katniss Everdeen, “the Girl Who Was on Fire” from Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games trilogy. Here’s to the girls who did what no one thought was possible, and stuck to their path even when it got difficult.
I often read things because I identify with the main characters. Both of these characters are ones I love: Kel for years, and Katniss for the last month. They are both great role models, but more than that, they are great people — so real and human and wonderful to read and share time with. I feel privileged that these authors shared them with me, and I share them with everyone I can.
